Estonia is beginning to attract tourists looking for an off-the-beaten tourist path adventure. As the northern-most Baltics country, Estonia has been controlled by a variety of foreign powers looking to control access to the Baltic Sea. Today, the country is working to preserve its history and cultural identity, as an independent country, with many museums and historical sites throughout the country. There is something for every traveler! Visit the country before it becomes swamped with tourists! Here are my top 5 best places to visit in Estonia.

    Old Town Tallinn

One of the most famous places to visit in Estonia and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tallinn! Step back into time by walking around the cobble stoned streets and looking at buildings dating back to the 15th century. By the town square is one of the oldest pharmacies in the world, which is still in operation today. Be sure to take many pictures of the red roofed skyline from the many 360 degrees aerial look out points.

    Lahemaa National Park

Just located an hour outside of Tallinn is one of Estonia’s most popular national parks. Explore miles of forest and walk along the boardwalk of the Viru Bog, which runs for 3 miles. Here, you’ll be able to capture gorgeous views and get up close with nature. Once in the middle of the park, you can grab a peak or tour of Sagadi Manor.

    Hiiumaa

Calling people who enjoy lighthouse hopping… Come see the Kõpu Lighthouse from the 15th century, which is one of the oldest remaining lighthouses in the world. Additionally, you can take photos of Tahkuna Lighthouse, which is the tallest lighthouse in Estonia made out of cast iron. Note, to visit this island you will need to take a small place or ferry from Tallinn.

    Rakvere Castle

A medieval castle from the 16th century in the city of Rakvere, where people have lived for over 1,500 years. Everyday in the castle is a medieval festival with staff wandering around in medieval costumes performing acts and workshops of traditional medieval handicraft techniques.

    Pärnu

A resort spa city located on the coast of the Pärnu River meeting the Gulf of Riga. This is where many locals will come to vacation during the summer months. However during the winter, the ocean will freeze over for miles at the Pärnu beach creating incredible views and glaciers. I felt like Elsa as I walked so far out into the ocean on the ice. It was an incredible experience!
