Part of the joy of travel is savoring local cuisine. Ireland, often associated with Guinness and whiskey, but there’s more to Ireland’s foodie culture than those 3! As a travel foodie, I delve into the rich tapestry of Irish flavors. Continue below for my recommendations of classic Irish food and drinks to try in Ireland.

    Boxty

Essentially, a thick potato pancake that’s fried then covered in some kind of stewish mixture such as cream, chicken, spring onions, and asparagus, or served with bacon and eggs for breakfast. This dish can be served at any time of the day!

    Irish Stew

Traditionally, this stew was made by tossing whatever the Irish had in their garden and pantry into a pot. Today, this stew is often made with beef, carrots, onions, potatoes, and a mix of herbs and spices. This is one of my favorite dishes, especially on a rainy day, and is super easy to recreate at home.

    Boiled Bacon and Cabbage

Exactly as the name plus potatoes. It may not sound appetizing, but it is a traditional Irish classic. Usually the pork is salted and then soaked overnight. It is then boiled with the cabbage, carrots, and potatoes, then served with a parsley sauce.

    Irish Coffee

Invented in 1942 by a chef who wanted to create something warm for the passengers on a delayed flight, since then it has become a classic drink, often served as a dessert for whiskey lovers and those with a sweet tooth.

    Irish Whiskey

Derived from the Gaelic word meaning, “the water of life,” whiskey dates far bar into Irish history. Irish whiskey is traditionally made from unmalted barley, and triple distilled, giving it the light color and smooth flavor. The main Irish manufacturers are Jameson and Bushmills, but there are many distilleries worth visiting around the country.

    Irish Soda Bread

The famous brown bread, where every family adds their own twists that’s passed on between generations. Despite being bread, there’s no yeast in the recipe! As a main staple for any meal, this bread can sometimes be seen being made with Guinness, raisins, bran, and dried cranberries.

    Colcannon

A mix of potatoes, cabbage, kale, butter, and spring onions. It is a classic Irish comfort food, but it is also served on Halloween with hidden trinkets in it. If you find a coin in yours, you will be rich. If you find a ring in yours, you better start planning the wedding because you’ll be at the altar in less than a year. However, if you find a thimble or a button, you’ll never marry.

    Black and White Pudding

The black pudding is made of pork meat, fat and blood mixed with barley, suet, oatmeal, some herbs and spices. White pudding is all the same as above minus the blood. It is often the star of the full Irish breakfast.

    Guinness

Dark ruby red colored Irish stout beer made from hops, roasted barley, yeast, and water. A traditional Irish drink that is now an integral part of Irish culture. You didn’t visit Ireland unless you had a pint of Guinness. If you’re visiting Dublin, stop by the Guinness Storehouse to learn about the process of making Guinness and its history.

    Potato and Leek Soup

My absolute favorite soup of all time is this delicious comfort food that is vegetarian friendly! It’s super easy to recreate at home. All you need is butter, leeks, garlic, Yukon gold potatoes, chicken broth, heavy cream, and chives with a mix of spices and herbs.

Embark on a culinary journey through Ireland’s rich flavors, where each dish and drink tells a story of tradition and warmth. From the iconic Guinness to the comforting Irish stew, these classic delights offer a taste of the country’s heart and heritage. So, as you explore the scenic landscapes and vibrant cities, don’t miss the opportunity to savor the essence of Ireland through its timeless culinary treasures. Raise a glass and indulge in the warmth of classic Irish food and drinks, creating memories that linger long after your journey’s end. Sláinte to an unforgettable gastronomic adventure!
