How Rambling Adventurista Was Created

Rambling Adventurista (RA) was born during the height of the pandemic—ironically, when travel was at its lowest point. But RA didn’t start as a travel blog. Its original purpose was to help me teach myself website development and marketing as I transitioned out of the medical field and into a new career path.

Unfortunately, my career switch lined up perfectly with the start of the pandemic. Internships were scarce, and my lack of marketing experience became painfully clear. I sent out hundreds of applications—nearly all rejected, often citing that my background was “too medical.”

RA became my solution—my way of creating an opportunity to learn and grow. The site originally focused on hobbies and ways to cope during the pandemic, but behind the scenes, I was learning to code, design websites, create content, and build a personal brand to add to my résumé.

By mid-pandemic, I had a portfolio: my website. After hundreds more applications, I landed my first internship at a B2B AI software startup. They were the first to take a chance on me—and I gave that role everything I had. With each new skill I gained, I applied it back to RA. With a bit of extra cash, I began taking budget trips. That’s when I truly caught the “travel bug.”

The Symbolism Behind RA's Design

Rambling Adventurista is a cultural travel blog not only for those exploring abroad—but also for people curious about the richness in their own backyards. The name “Ra” was a childhood nickname from my brother, and yes, it’s also inspired by the Egyptian Sun God. The logo reflects that connection but with a twist—it’s not the exact hieroglyphic. That’s intentional. I’m forging my own identity, and that individuality is reflected in the bird motifs across my site, symbolizing freedom and flight.

The logo was designed by one of my best friends, Melanie, founder of Mgraphx.com—a talented designer you should absolutely check out. As for the color palette: it’s bold and unique, just like me. I intentionally chose colors not often used in travel blogs.

All About Ra- The Origin Story & The Future

One of the first things people usually notice about me is my bold appearance—often dressed in bright colors and patterns, with 30+ bracelets stacked on my arms.

The next thing? My loud personality... and my even louder voice. I’m American, and I definitely fall into the “loud American” stereotype.

Then, if we strike up a conversation and start swapping life stories and adventures, the usual reaction is: “Wait, who are you? How did you end up living this adventurous life?”

RA Moves Abroad

I had initially planned to study abroad in Russia in summer 2020 to improve my Russian language skills—but that, of course, didn’t happen. In spring 2021, I learned about the Fulbright program. I saw it as a potential gateway to language immersion and cultural exchange before entering the “real world.”

Still working at the startup, I submitted a Fulbright application to Moldova—not expecting much, especially after being rejected for the CLS scholarship. But in April 2022, I received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant award. I eagerly accepted and prepared to leave my internship, live alone for the first time, and move to a part of the world I’d never been to.

If you’ve read my articles about Moldova, you know how deeply I fell in love with the country, its culture, and its people. I was fortunate to receive a second Fulbright ETA award to Moldova. Over those two years, I taught—but in many ways, I was the student. I learned about myself, gained new perspectives, picked up new languages, and developed resilience through challenge and change. Moldova is where I truly discovered my love of travel and cultural immersion.

After two years, the linguist in me was ready to dive into a new challenge: learning an Austronesian language. I had previously studied Mandarin and Thai and knew tonal languages didn’t come easily to me. In spring 2024, I received a Boren Fellowship to study in Indonesia.

Before the program began, I had only a brief exposure to Bahasa Indonesia, but I felt confident in its accessibility. I lived with a host family in Malang and studied intensively at Universitas Negeri Malang. Within two months, I reached a C1 proficiency level and began conducting research on how tourism development impacts local culture and language.

Throughout all these programs, I made it a point to travel to lesser-known cities, villages, and towns—to speak with locals in their languages, and to document those experiences on RA. The goal? To offer thoughtful, culturally rooted travel content—not just another “influencer” blog.

What I loved most was highlighting local voices and stories. Many people I met had never interacted with an American before—something I’d never thought about until I left the U.S.

Now that I’m back in the States, I carry those lessons with me daily, both professionally and personally. Unlike many travel bloggers who quit their jobs to travel full-time (which is great for them!), I thrive in structure, building communities, and pushing myself to grow in a professional role. Why? Because everything I learn in marketing jobs, I apply back to RA—what works, what doesn’t, what trends, and what connects.

It makes every moment abroad even more meaningful.

Challenging the Travel Influencer Industry

My hope is that RA inspires you to take the path less traveled. To challenge the overly polished Instagram version of travel. To connect, to listen, to learn.

RA has big dreams—starting with building a robust website filled with stories, guides, and insights that often go untold. Someday, I hope to bring an immersive travel experience to your fingertips.

Until then—stay curious, stay bold, and tell people to flock off if they doubt your dreams.
And remember: “Always believe in yourself, even if no one else does.” – Ra
