A beautiful coastal city on the Turkish Riviera in the southwest of Türkiye, Antalya was once an ancient Greco-Roman city that has evolved into an attraction for both locals and tourists seeking to bask in the warm sun and savor the turquoise waters. Explore a blend of modern and cobblestoned streets, visit museums, savor Turkish fruit wine, and indulge in spectacular views. Getting to Antalya, Türkiye: Transportation Options and Travel Tips

Despite being a major hub for athletic competitions and a point of interest for tourists seeking relaxation on the beach, Antalya has limited transportation options for reaching the city, with the main choices being by plane, bus, or car. The most popular option is by plane, with Antalya's international airport facilitating daily international and domestic flights, including those operated by budget airlines. The flight from Istanbul to Antalya takes only an hour and a half.

Another popular choice is by bus, offering a more scenic and budget-friendly route to the city. Many cities across Türkiye provide direct buses, some of which are overnight journeys, to Antalya, including popular routes from Cappadocia and Istanbul. The journey from Cappadocia to Antalya, for example, takes approximately 8 hours.

Renting a car becomes a great option if you plan to explore beyond the city center of Antalya or travel around the country, especially since not all main tourist sites are easily accessible by public transportation.

During my visit to Antalya, I opted for a guided tour group that traversed the country using the company's private luxury bus. While the bus journey took some time between cities, it proved to be a more budget-friendly option and allowed for visits to additional locations along the travel route.

Where to Stay in Antalya, Türkiye?

Antalya is a major resort city offering various accommodations, including hotels, hostels, and Airbnbs, with prices varying based on factors such as proximity to the beach, luxury level, time of year, and amenities provided. For those seeking a worry-free travel experience with private beach access, services, and water activities, there are also all-inclusive resorts. Below are defined the main regions of the city to assist in the accommodation search process:

Kaleici: The Old Town city center, ideal for first-time visitors.

Konyaalti Beach: The best place for families and those interested in all-inclusive resorts.

Belek: Suited for those seeking luxury accommodations and golf courses.

Olympos Beach: The ideal place for those wanting to immerse themselves in nature.

Lara Beach: Catering to beachgoers and individuals interested in nightlife.

During my visit to Antalya, my guided tour group booked us at a hotel in Kaleici. The hotel, located directly in the city center on cobblestoned streets, was perfect for accessing main tourist attractions, close to restaurants, and great for nightlife. While it offered a great location, the only downside was the potential disturbance from late-night club music and concerts.

Getting Around Antalya, Türkiye

Car

If you plan on traveling beyond the city center or to other destinations in Türkiye, renting a car becomes a convenient option. Cars are available for rent from local companies or larger agencies at Antalya’s airport at a reasonable price, and all you need is an international driver’s license.

Bus

Single-ride tickets can be purchased for 9 TRY, or you can opt for an AntalyaKart card (link) with a one-time fee of 15 TRY. This card allows you to load money onto it for multiple uses on public transportation. You can buy these cards at kiosks around the city or at machines near major stops. Buses operate throughout the day, covering routes in the city center and beyond.

Tram

For transportation and a fun way to explore some of Antalya’s most interesting sites, consider using the tram. With ten stops covering about 5 kilometers, the tram runs daily from 07:00-23:00. It departs every half hour from the Konyaaltı station (in front of the Antalya Museum) and Zerdalilik Station (the main station).

Taxi

Numerous taxis are available to help you navigate the city center or reach destinations beyond the central region. Taxis can be hailed from the street or by calling a local company, and local guides or hotels can assist in arranging a cab, especially if you don’t speak Turkish. Remember to carry cash to pay and confirm the fare in advance.

Bicycle/Electric Scooter

Rental bikes and electric scooters are now accessible throughout the city, ideal for short-distance travel. Major companies offering these services include Marti, BinBin, Antbis, and Tornet, all of which have downloadable applications for your phone. Set up an account, add a credit card or a driver’s license for the mopeds, scan the QR code, and you're ready to go. Additionally, local companies directly offer bike and moped rentals.

Walking

Despite being the 5th largest city in Türkiye, the main tourist section is relatively small and walkable. The city center offers plenty to see, do, and experience, with major attractions situated close to each other. Sidewalks are widespread, and people stroll from early morning to late evening. This was my chosen method of exploration around the city.

Antalya is a gorgeous city with a rich history and much to explore. While many companies offer guided tours, I highly recommend taking advantage of the free walking tours available. Hadrian's Gate

Constructed in 130 AD for Roman Emperor Hadrian, Hadrian’s Gate was once part of the city walls surrounding Antalya. Today, it stands alone in the city center, serving as the entrance to the Old Town. This iconic attraction provides a glimpse into the Roman influence on the city.

Old Town

Explore the historic Kaleiçi district with its cobblestoned streets and well-preserved Ottoman-era buildings. The Old Town boasts numerous shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, and bazaars. Don't miss the Kaleiçi Marina, a popular spot among locals, where you can observe the catch of the day and enjoy a sunset with a bottle of wine on the dock.

Karaalioglu Park

As the largest urban park in Antalya, Karaalioglu Park offers a pleasant setting for a stroll, coffee break, or to witness the sunrise or sunset. Adorned with colorful flowers and palm trees, the park features the Roman-era Hidirlik Tower and the Municipal City Theater, providing spectacular views of the Mediterranean.

Antalya Aquarium

Home to the world's largest aquarium tunnel, spanning 430 feet in length and 10 feet in width, Antalya’s aquarium is among the largest complexes globally, covering just under 13,000 square feet and housing over 40 thematic aquariums. With interactive exhibits and aquariums catering to all ages, it offers a captivating experience.

Antalya Archaeological Museum

Encompassing over 75,000 square feet, the museum showcases exhibits ranging from Paleolithic and Byzantine artworks to Ottoman-era artifacts. With 13 exhibit halls and galleries featuring Roman statues, burial art, jewelry, tools, and coins, visitors can also explore the Natural History Hall displaying fossils and bones, along with the Pre-History Hall exhibiting items found in Karain Cave.

Beaches

Bask in the sun and swim in the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean at popular beaches such as Beach Park, Lara Beach, Olympos Beach, Omi Beach, and the renowned Konyaalti Plajlari. While most beaches are open to the public, offering rental services for umbrellas, chairs, and water activities, some are exclusive to resort guests.

Festivals

If you’re visiting from April to October, you may be able to attend either the Sandland or The Fire of Antalya. Sandland, also known as the Antalya Sand Sculpture Festival, is one of the world’s largest outdoor sand sculpture exhibitions on Lara Beach. The exhibition consists of giant sculptures using up to 10,000 pounds of sand with a new theme each year. The Fire of Anatolia dance show is a blend of music, dance, and storytelling. Over 120 dancers, musicians, and drummers come together to retell the history of Anatolia through the ages. The Fire of Anatolia holds a Guinness World record for the fastest dance performance.

Republic Square

One of the main gathering points in the city. The square was built in 1923 to commemorate Atatürk’s rise to power and the foundation of the Turkish Republic Cumhuriyet Meydanı, or Republic Square, has become a significant attraction. In the center of the square is a massive bronze statue of Ataturk mounted on a horse surrounded by smaller statues and plaques commemorating military victories. Throughout the year, many concerts and festivals are held here for public performances.

Antalya State Opera and Ballet

Established in 1999, the Antalya State Opera and Ballet have become cultural landmarks. This venue showcases classical opera, contemporary ballet, and traditional Turkish music performances. Additionally, it hosts the Antalya Piano Festival every Friday evening between October and May.

Travel Tip

Be sure to dress appropriately when visiting mosques. Women must cover their hair or else they will not be allowed to enter, so always carry a scarf with you just in case.
