Safety

Slovakia is generally a safe country to visit, including for solo female travelers. People often walk throughout the day, with public transportation operating late into the evenings. It is important to note that pickpocketing is common during the peak tourist seasons and summer months, and tourists are the main target so be sure to take appropriate precautions. I, unfortunately, had the experience of a male getting mad at me for not giving him money outside of St. Martin’s Cathedral after he twice got into my personal space and cussed me out in Slovak. When I went to enter the cathedral, he blocked the entrance and then spat on me when I walked around him, at which point I yelled at him in Russian and he left. It is important to trust your fight-or-flight instinct.
