Indonesia is a relatively safe country in the main cities. When traveling to less popular towns and villages with foreigners, locals can become wary and pay more attention to foreigners who look different. However, generally, the attention is harmful. The country is known for smaller crimes, such as stealing phones from people walking while on motorbikes, pickpocketing, and sometimes stealing bags, so it is important to stay aware of your surroundings and belongings. As Indonesia is a Muslim-majority country, local women generally travel in groups with other women or a male. Usually, foreigners experience fewer problems, but I highly recommend women visiting take precautions and not walk alone at night.
