What to Expect in Türkiye
Languages
The official language of Türkiye is Turkish, but many people in major cities will know English. I recommend learning a few popular phrases to help you and surprise a few locals.
Currency
The official currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY).
Outlets
Type F is the main socket type, but Types C and F can be used within this outlet type.
Transportation
Taxis, buses, mini-busses, the metro, boats, and walking are available to help you travel to other cities or within cities throughout Türkiye.
Safety
Türkiye is a safe country to visit, including for female travelers. I can attest to this as I visited as a solo female traveler and met many other solo female travelers. Women should still dress conservatively, as it is a conservative country with a Muslim majority population. When visiting mosques, you will need to cover. While some cities are more western than others, still exercise caution when traveling around as a female traveler, such as sitting by other groups of women or next to other travelers.
My Favorite Memories
Staying at a local family’s home in a village, dining and conversing with them while experiencing the hospitality of a traditional family setting. There wasn’t even cellular service!
Learning the art of making traditional Turkish carpets at a foundation that empowers women by teaching them business skills and providing training to operate their own businesses.
Indulging in the delightful array of Turkish cuisine during my visit and then mastering the preparation of a few traditional dishes at a small family-owned restaurant. It is true when they say that scents and food can evoke memories.
