    How to Get to Ungheni

Ungheni, is often pictured with the train station because it is one of the few cities in Moldova that has local and international trains. Located near the border with Romania, Ungheni is well-connected by various transportation methods. Whether you're traveling from within Moldova or abroad, here are some ways to reach Ungheni.

travel guide to Ungheni, what to do in Ungheni, Ungheni sign, Moldova

    Plane

The closest international airport to Ungheni is Chișinău International Airport, located approximately 100 kilometers away. From the airport, you can take a taxi, hire a private car, or use public transportation to reach Ungheni. For those flying into Iași International Airport in Romania, it's a shorter journey of about 70 kilometers to Ungheni. You can take a bus or train from Iasi to Ungheni, but times and spots are limited. I highly recommend purchasing your ticket(s) in advance.

    Train

Ungheni is a significant railway junction in Moldova, making it accessible by train. Direct trains connect Ungheni to Chișinău, the capital, and other major Moldovan cities. Additionally, there are international train routes from Romania, with Ungheni serving as a border crossing point. The trains fill up quickly, so be sure to purchase your tickets online or arrive at the station early to purchase them in advance.

    Minibus

Marshrutka services operate between Ungheni and Chișinău, as well as other towns in Moldova. The journey by bus from Chișinău typically takes around two hours. For travelers coming from Romania, buses and minibuses from Iași or nearby cities also provide direct routes to Ungheni. This is a budget-friendly option with a typical travel time of approximately 2 hours. The website here can be used to check the daily schedules but do not buy your tickets online because sometimes they're not accepted. Wait until you arrive at the bus station. For traveling to Ungheni, you will need to go to Gara de Nord.

    Car

Driving to Ungheni is a convenient option, especially for those who value flexibility. The town is easily accessible via well-maintained roads from Chișinău and other parts of Moldova. If you're coming from Romania, you can cross the border at Sculeni, which is a short drive from Ungheni.

    Taxi

Private cars and taxis are available for hire to transport between Chisinau and Ungheni. This offers a more comfortable and direct ride, but it is also more expensive. The ride typically takes around 2 hours. Sometimes, you will be able to take a taxi, but you will need to confirm with the company that they can drive between cities because usually, cars ordered through taxi apps such as YandexGo can't travel beyond their main cities of operation.

I've traveled to and from Ungheni from within Moldova and internationally by car, bus, and train. Regardless of the method of transport, the trip usually takes 2 hours. If you plan on taking the bus or train, I highly recommend getting to the station at least 30 minutes in advance before the departure time you desire because the tickets will sell out.

You might want to pick a place with nice views of the Prut River. This way, you can wake up to the calm of nature.

    Hotels

Since Ungheni is a smaller city, it currently only has a few hotels that provide comfortable and convenient stays for visitors. Right now there are only three: Style Hotel, Vila Verde, and Urban Hotel Express. These establishments often offer standard amenities, including Wi-Fi, parking, and on-site dining, making them a great choice for travelers seeking ease and simplicity.

    Guesthouse

Currently, there is only one guesthouse/bed and breakfast in the city and it is at Crama Mircesti, the winery in the city's region. Whether you're celebrating a life event, holiday, or time with friends or family, the winery offers a cozy setting and time to get away to the countryside.

    Car

Renting a car is an option for those interested in traveling around Moldova and into more of the countryside locations. If interested in renting a car in Moldova, I highly recommend renting from one of the many agencies in Chisinau, which will ensure you have the correct paperwork and information if you intend to visit Prinestrovie or Romania. Note that some of the roads might be less well-maintained, so be aware of bumps in the road.

    Bus/Mashrutka

Mini-buses called marshrutkas are budget-friendly modes of transportation. They're ideal for getting to local neighborhoods and nearby attractions. The bus route information may not always be posted, so it's best to ask a driver or a local for details. The current cost for city routes is 6 Moldovan lei.

    Bike

Biking is a popular method to get around the city amongst adults and children. However, cyclists do not have the right of way and cars will not always stop. Be aware of vehicles when biking.

    Taxi

Please note that popular taxi services like Uber and Lyft are not available in Moldova. Instead, you can call the local taxi number or use the iTaxi or YandexGo apps. Keep in mind that these apps primarily operate in the capital city, but there are usually a couple available in Ungheni. You will need to ask for the local taxi number, but unless you know Romanian you will need assistance in ordering the taxi. Flagging down taxis on the road is also an option. Ensure you request a price estimate before entering the cab and be cautious of unmarked cars posing as taxis. Opt for marked taxis affiliated with reputable taxi companies to prioritize your safety, particularly if you're a foreigner and unfamiliar with the local languages.

Many attractions, including local markets, parks, and the Prut River area, are within walking distance, offering a leisurely way to enjoy the city.
