Getting to Valletta, Malta: Transportation Options and Travel Tips

Since I added Malta to my itinerary for a weekend trip while I was still in Antibes, Nice was the closest airport. However, flights to Malta from Nice were more expensive than Marseille to Nice so I ended up taking the train from Antibes to Marseille, and then flying out of Marseille to save money.

Once in Malta, there were buses, taxis, and shuttle buses available for transportation. I had just missed the bus to San Giljan, so I took a taxi for 20 euros to my hotel.

When planning my travel routes, evaluating costs, and considering various transportation methods, I often rely on Rome2rio, which provides comprehensive information, including possible combinations of routes and suggestions for making stops along the way, allowing for a customized travel experience.

Where to Stay in Valletta, Malta?

The three major tourist areas are Valletta, the capital, San Gilian, and Mdina. I stayed at the Hotel Hyatt Regency in San Giljan, which is a great area for the summer since it’s surrounded by beaches. Within the hotel complex is three different restaurants, with a shopping mall across the street, and a bus stop at the corner.

My room was extremely clean, stocked with complimentary bottles of water each day. The hotel staff was extremely helpful with providing information on where to visit while in Malta, and with calling for a cab. My return flight to Paris was at 6:40 am, and the hotel staff helped me get a taxi at 4am within 5 minutes.

    Getting Around Valletta, Malta

    Car

Experience the freedom of exploring Valletta and its surrounding areas by renting a car in Malta, allowing you to conveniently navigate the city's picturesque streets and embark on unforgettable adventures.

    Bus

The primary mode of transportation for locals and tourists alike, buses are conveniently accessible with stops located throughout major tourist attractions. Buses arrive at main stops every few minutes, and fares range from €1.5 to €3 per trip, valid for up to 3 hours. Even when we were on the opposite side of the country, the longest we waited for a bus was 30 minutes. Buses are well-maintained, usually punctual, and operate until late hours.

    Taxi

Arriving at the airport, taxis are readily available at designated stands with fixed prices. For instance, our ride to San Giljan/St. Julian's hotel cost €20 Euros. While exploring Malta, we noticed a single taxi stand near Valletta, the capital, by the bus stations. If necessary, it's advisable to have the hotel arrange a taxi or keep a taxi driver's contact information.

    Ferry

Malta offers regular ferry services that connect the main island with Comino and Gozo islands. The public ferry operates every 30 minutes, providing access to these two islands, which are only reachable by public ferry, private boat, or organized excursions.

    Walking

Major streets in Malta feature sidewalks, providing safe walking paths during the day. However, it's important to note that street lighting is limited, and people tend to be out late at night, so walking during nighttime is not recommended. Since attractions in Malta are spread out, it is advisable to take a bus to the main destination, explore the area on foot, and then use the bus to move to the next stop.
