Top 5 Best Places to Visit in Lithuania
Curious about visiting the Baltic States? Maybe you’re just hearing of Lithuania for the first time? Look no further! Lithuania has something to see and do for every age and every type of traveler. Continue to read on to learn my top 5 places to visit in Lithuania for travel inspiration and for places to add to your travel list!
Hill of Crosses
Located in the northern part of Lithuania, the Hill of Crosses was my most favorite place that I visited in Lithuania and is actually in the top 10 unique places that I’ve visited in the world! No matter how many times different governments have tried to remove it, the hill always becomes repopulated with crosses. The exact date of the hill’s creation remains unknown, but it was first mentioned in writing in 1831 as people lay crosses as tributes to those who rebelled against the Russians. Today, the hill has over 10,000 crosses of different sizes and designs from countries all around the world.
Trakai Island Castle
A red brick and stone castle that was built in the 14th century in the middle of a lake. The Grand Dukes of Lithuania used to reside in the castle. Today, it is a museum that is very popular with tourists. During the warmer months, you can rent a mini boat and cruise around the lake by the castle.
Curonian Spit National Park
Escape the busy city life and surround yourself with nature at this large national park that is part of the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation. The park is washed by the salty waters of the Baltic Sea and the freshwater from Kurshskaya Bay. Explore the colorful towering sand dunes and catch a glimpse of the variety of wildlife that live in the park. Get ready to take lots of photos!
The Witches Mountain
Witches are a very popular legend amongst Lithuanian culture, so why not visit the Witches Mountain? Lithuanian folklore suggests that the Giantess Nergina created the mountain, and it is now inhabited by characters from Lithuanian folklore. Local beliefs maintain that the mountain is divided by light and dark forces, with one side of the mountain consistently appearing darker than the other.
IX Fort of the Kovno Fortress
For my history buffs, visit the city of Kaunas to see the Kovno Fortress. During World War II the fort became the locale for the mass exterminations of Jews and Poles. Thousands were killed at Fort VII and IX, and IX was also used as a prison. When the prison was too full, prisoners were driven to a ditch, shot, and then covered with quicklime to hide the evidence. Sixty prisoners managed to escape and tell the atrocities that occurred at Fort IX.
As we conclude our journey through the top 5 best places to visit in Lithuania, we hope you’ve been inspired to explore this enchanting Baltic gem.
