When traveling , we are often finding short term connections with our surroundings and those we share those adventures and moments with. Even if we don’t mean it, those moments and people are tied to those memories and places. These short term connections are great for in the moment, but can leave those traveling for longer periods of time craving deeper connections and/or valuing the alone time.

Regardless, when traveling you’re creating your own path and finding opportunities where some may not see them. These moments, people, opportunities, etc. can see random at the moment but they’re all teaching us along the way. It may not seem it in the moment but when you scroll through your camera roll, remembering the times from your travels, you will see how those adventures shaped you to who you are in the present moment.

Trust the process, and seize the moment for travel.

5 Tips for Visiting Borobudur and Prambanan Temples

Arguably one of the most popular tourist attractions for both foreign and domestic tourists in Yogyakarta and locations you will NOT want to miss. Whether you’re a traveler planner or spontaneous backpacker, these tips will make sure you don’t miss out on your visit to Yogyakarta.

1. BOOK YOUR TICKETS IN ADVANCE- I cannot stress this enough as there are only a LIMITED amount of tickets available each day to climb to the top of Borobudur. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.

2. Consider a guided sunrise and sunset tour- Don’t stress about the planning of tickets and transportation, and instead focus on taking in breathtaking views. These also sell out so I recommend booking in advance (noticing a trend?) Be sure to check that your tour includes the entrance tickets because usually hostel tours and Get Your Guide do not!

3. A guide is needed if you want to learn about the temples- there’s no information boards or museums on the premises that explain the history and significance of all the details in the temples.

4. Bring water, a handheld fan, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, etc.- It gets HOT HOT HOT. The staff recognize this and include a small water bottle during your entrance to the site but if you’re visiting during the mid-afternoon sun, you’ll want to be prepared to avoid heat causation and dehydration. The tours take all day and there’s much to see/experience.

5. Expect crowds and beware of pickpockets- As a popular tourist spot, there’s going to be a lot of people and crowds from around the world. While the staff are usually walking around monitoring security, pickpockets are everywhere so practice general travel safety. Also, expect that you will have people in your photos. There’s just so many people all trying to capture their moment.

When I visited the temples, I was on all all day sunrise to sunset tour with stops along the way which included guided at all the sights. While the 4AM start and 8PM return was a long day, the experience was one of the highlights of my visit to Yogyakarta.
