Flixbus is one of the most popular bus companies that offer cheap international routes, bringing people to Timisoara from other countries, and this is also how I traveled to Timisoara from Budapest. Located 20 minutes from the city center is Timisoara’s international airport. The airport has international and domestic flights arriving and departing daily, including budget-friendly airlines. From the airport, public transportation is readily available with a direct route to the city center. While this method is a little more expensive, it is sometimes the only option if you’re traveling from afar.

Another popular budget-friendly option is the train, a method commonly used by locals and tourists alike. CFR is the go-to website for booking domestic and international train tickets. Timisoara is a smaller city but is car-friendly beyond the city center, with Union Square. Having a car isn’t necessary if you’re only visiting Timisoara, but it can be useful if you plan on visiting smaller cities or destinations in Romania that are difficult to reach without a car. One highly recommended hostel is Inverve Hostel, situated in a refurbished synagogue, providing a unique experience.

During my visit, I opted for an Airbnb in Piata Unirii, costing about $40 per night. In the middle of a month-long trip, I sought privacy and a space to recharge my social battery. Airbnb options are scattered throughout the city, with an average price of $30-$40 per night.

Car

Timisoara is a small city but is car-friendly and has plenty of parking options. While it is not necessary to have a car to get around the city due to the excellent network of public transportation, having a car is helpful if you plan to explore Romania and venture into the outskirts. Bus/Tram/Trolleybus

All three options are easy to use, with a wide network facilitating travel around the city and into the suburbs from early morning to late evening. Tickets cost around 2 Romanian Lei and can be purchased at ticketing stands at major stops or by using a credit card when boarding. I recommend using the tap-and-pay feature with your credit card because it’s more convenient and quicker. Just make sure you tap and hold your card to the machine and confirm that the payment was received on the screen before sitting down.

Bicycle/Electric Scooters

Bikes and electric scooters are available for hire around town. All you need to do is download the app on the bike or scooter, scan the QR code, and then pay as you ride. There are many bike lanes around the city, respected by locals, making it easy for you to get around.

Taxi

Standard taxis, Ubers, and Bolt are available in Timisoara. Many locals speak English, making it easy for visitors who don’t speak Romanian to get around. Hailing a cab from the street may result in a higher price, especially for foreigners. I recommend using taxi apps or calling a cab company ahead of time to ensure that you are getting the best price.

Walking

Locals and tourists walk around the city throughout the day and into the late evening. Sidewalks are everywhere and well-maintained, with street lights. This was my main method of seeing the city because the city is small, and you will not need a map. As a solo female traveler, I felt safe walking around at all times of the day.
