As the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen is a popular Scandinavian destination known for its safety, cleanliness, and blend of old and modern architecture. The city's infectious positive vibes can be felt regardless of the weather, making it a favorite among travelers.

In Copenhagen, you'll discover the concept of hygge.

How to Get to Copenhagen, Denmark?

This Scandinavic city is easily accessible through various means of transportation, including plane, bus, train, or carpooling/driving. The city's size and popularity for tourism ensure convenient connections to the city center from different locations worldwide, allowing for a smooth and quick journey to your accommodation.

During my visit to Copenhagen, I flew from Chișinău, Moldova, with a layover in Vienna. The total travel time, including airport wait times, amounted to approximately 7 hours. Bus and train travel options are generally cheaper but may take longer to reach your final destination. Rome2rio is a helpful resource to compare travel methods and prices.

    Getting Around
    Copenhagen, Denmark

    Car

Copenhagen is focusing on reducing the city’s carbon footprint and encouraging the locals and tourists to use public transportation or biking. That said, there are still a large number of people using cars and driving around Copenhagen. As the capital, the city often experiences high levels of traffic throughout the year of locals commuting to and from work as well as peak tourist season. Additionally, parking is very limited in the city. Driving is possible but Copenhagen’s public transportation is relatively cheap and takes you to or relatively close to the main tourist attractions.

    Metro

This is the main method of public transportation used between locals and tourists. However, when visiting you will either need to purchase a Rejsekort card or a Copenhagen card to use the metro. You must check in with both before boarding the metro or changing trains at 30 DKK. If you don’t check in you will receive a ticket of 750 DKK… How do I know? Because I got one 🙁 My card didn’t register at check-in and I got a lovely fine as a souvenir. The difference between the cards is the Rejsekort card is specific to the metro only. The Copenhagen card is a pass for the city including public transportation, museums, and discounts for however many days you purchase the pass. For more information on the Copenhagen Card, visit Copenhagen’s main website here.

    Bus

The buses go around the city very frequently and are relatively easy to use. Bus tickets cost 24 DKK but must be purchased before either at the ticket machines in the city or through the mobile app called “DOT Billetter.” If you prefer to use cash, you can pay as you get on the bus but the drivers only accept cash, not cards.

    Taxi

Uber is NOT in Copenhagen! Instead the main app to use when ordering a taxi is TAXA 4x35 available for both IOS and Android users. The app is very similar in design and usage to Uber. There are other taxi companies in Copenhagen that are available throughout the city and in the main tourist attractions.

    Bike

Very similar to Amsterdam, Copenhagen has bikes everywhere! According to local tour guides there are 2.6 bikes in the city per every person in Copenhagen. If you are interested in seeing the city similar to the locals, there are different bike rentals on the streets. The most common is with Bolt where you use the app to scan the QR code on the bike and pay as you ride.

Hop On & Hop Off Bus

Very touristy but it is a great way to learn about the city, see/learn about the location of the main tourist spots, as well as have transportation throughout the city. If you decide to get off of the bus to visit a sight then you can get back on the bus after you’re done taking photos.

    Walking

This was the main way I traveled around the city. The main tourist spots are around a 40 minute walk apart, which may sound like a long walk, but it is a great way to see different parts of the city and to pause and take photos along the way. Here, you will be able to find local hangout spots and go off the beaten path.
