Nicknamed “Little Paris,” Bucharest is the capital of Romania. The city was founded by a shepherd named “Bucur,” which literally means “joy.” Bucharest is filled with a rich history, reflected in the influences on architecture still visible today: French-inspired, Oriental influences, communist remnants, and pushes towards westernization. With so much to do, you will not be bored during your visit. Read this travel guide to Bucharest to learn how to make your visit memorable.

Getting to Bucharest, Romania: Transportation Options and Travel Tips

Due to Bucharest being a major city, there are many transportation options available to reach it from within Romania and internationally. Bucharest has the largest airport in Romania, called Bucharest Henri Coanda International. Located 20 kilometers from Bucharest city center, thousands of flights arrive and depart from the airport daily, including major and budget airlines. Upon arrival, buses and the metro are available to transport you to the city center.

People interested in visiting different cities in Romania or other countries in the Balkan regions often opt for driving and add Bucharest to their road trip in the summer months. The roads in Romania are generally well-maintained, except for a few dirt roads in rural regions. When entering or leaving the country, you will need to go through border checks. It is important to note that some border police or police officers may not speak English.

Trains and buses are some of the most popular and cheapest methods of travel for locals and tourists when traveling around Romania and to Bucharest. Flixbus is the most popular option for international buses to get to Bucharest, and CFR is the main train company for domestic and international travel. When I traveled to Romania from Budapest, I used Flixbus to travel to Timisoara and then took a direct overnight train to reach Bucharest. It is important to note that buses and trains tend to be 1-2 hours later than the estimated arrival time, especially if there’s a border crossing.

When planning my travel routes, evaluating costs, and considering various transportation methods, I often rely on Rome2rio. This invaluable tool provides comprehensive information, including possible combinations of routes and suggestions for making stops along the way, allowing for a customized and well-informed travel experience.

Where to Stay in Bucharest, Romania?

Since Bucharest is a large city with attractions spread out, choosing your home base may seem daunting. Simplifying the city's regions:

Old Town: Ideal for first-time visitors.

Piata Unirii: Suited for budget travelers.

    Lipscani: Vibrant nightlife hub.

Floreasca: Trendy, new place to stay.

    Tineretului: Perfect for families.

Within each region, find various accommodations at different prices. Prices tend to rise in the warm months, Bucharest's peak tourist season. During my December visit, I opted for an Airbnb near the Parliament building, convenient for public transportation but not within walking distance of many attractions, resulting in added transportation costs. Consider these factors when choosing your accommodation base.

    Getting Around Bucharest, Romania

    Car

Driving in Bucharest is not recommended unless you plan to visit other Romanian cities or drive to other countries. The city is highly traffic-congested, with limited parking availability.

    Bus/Tram/Trolleybus

These options cover the city, with tickets costing 3 Romanian Lei per boarding. Purchase tickets or passes at stands or through the 24 Pay app, but remember to validate them onboard to avoid fines. While Apple Pay and credit card tap-to-pay are available onboard, relying on the mobile app is recommended due to occasional payment system issues. Beware of pickpocketing.

    Bicycle/Electric Scooters

Explore the city on bikes or electric scooters available for rent. Download the designated apps, scan the QR code, and pay as you go.

    Metro

Bucharest boasts five metro lines (M1, M2, M3, M4, and M5) connecting the city and suburbs. Tickets, day passes, or multi-day passes can be purchased at ticketing stations, via the mobile app 24 Pay, or by tapping your credit card for each journey.

    Taxi

Taxi prices in Bucharest are higher than in other Romanian cities. Confirm the fare before the ride, ensuring the meter aligns with the displayed rates. Alternatively, use Ubers or Bolts for convenience.

    Walking

Locals and tourists stroll around the city throughout the day and into the late evening. With well-maintained sidewalks and street lights, walking is a safe and enjoyable way to explore Bucharest. However, due to the city's large size, you will need to combine walking with another method of transport in order to see a lot of sights within the city. As a solo female traveler, I felt secure walking at all times.
