Getting to Riga, Latvia: Transportation Options and Travel Tips
Riga is a very easy destination to travel to because of the wide variety of transportation options traveling to and from the city. There are over 85 cities in Europe, Asia, and Africa that fly into Riga’s International Airport, located 10 kilometers from Riga, daily.
Ferries travel directly to Riga from Stockholm every other day. There are a few other options, but the boats do not travel out of Riga’s port.
There are a few train and bus routes available depending on where you are traveling from. These tend to be the cheaper options to travel to Riga, but they’re also the longest. You can also drive to Riga, which is a great option if you’re planning on visiting the other Baltic States or other parts of Latvia. Note that there is no border control when entering from other Baltic States because Latvia is part of the Schengen Agreement, unless you’re traveling from Russia.

While city center or Old Town accommodations tend to be pricier, venturing slightly farther can provide more affordable options. Consider the seasonality of your visit, as warmer months typically attract more tourists.

Getting Around Riga, Latvia
Car
Rent a car or moped at Riga’s International Airport to conveniently explore Riga and Latvia. Familiarize yourself with local driving laws and road signs before hitting the road.
Tram/Trolleybus/Bus
Easily navigate Riga with trams, trolleybuses, and buses operating daily from 5:30 to 23:30. Purchase tickets for a specific duration at kiosks or Riga Transport ticket offices. Some newer trams offer onboard ticket purchase, but validation is essential to avoid fines.
Taxi
While Uber isn't popular in Riga, Bolt is! Utilize the Bolt app for convenient travel within Riga. Alternatively, rely on local taxi companies like Red Cab, BalticTaxi, and TaksiLV. Request a price estimate beforehand and ensure the meter is on to prevent overcharging.
Bike/Electric Scooters
Discover the city on rented bikes and scooters available through QR code scanning or kiosk payment. Note that helmets may not be provided, and options may decrease as you move away from the city center.
Walking
