Shopping for souvenirs is an essential part of any trip. In the Czech Republic, I encourage you to go beyond the typical tourist shops and explore local businesses that offer unique, handmade gifts. By supporting these local artisans, you not only bring back one-of-a-kind mementos but also help preserve their traditions. Below are my top 10 authentic Czech souvenirs for you to consider when visiting the Czech Republic.

    Kovap Mechanical Toys

For over 50 years, the company Kovodružstvo Náchod, quickly referred to as Kovap, has been making collector toys of cars, fire engines, and other types of vehicles. To produce a finished product, it takes more than 300 steps in the process! While they may not be the most flashy vehicles or souvenirs, they’ve become heirlooms over the years and a preservation of the traditional production process.

    Bohemian Glass

Bohemian glass, originating from the Czech lands, has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. Renowned for its exceptional quality and craftsmanship, many consider it some of the finest glass in Europe. The Czech Republic is the proud home of the world’s oldest glassmaking school, which has been instrumental in preserving and advancing this art form. One of the signature styles of Bohemian glass is the intricate and detailed glass cutting. Skilled glass cutters meticulously engrave intricate patterns, creating a mesmerizing interplay of light and glass. This technique is a testament to the artistry and precision of Czech glassmakers.

    Marionettes

A craft dating back to the Middle Ages, Czech puppeteers toured around Europe in the 18th century putting on puppet shows, which lead to the creation of official puppet theaters in the Czech Republic. They’re still putting on performance today, especially in Prague. While artisans and mass production companies create many commercial-style marionettes for purchase, you can still find traditionally designed ones that reflect Czech culture.

    Czech Beer

Did you know that the Czechs consume the most beer in the world? Czech beer is very smooth and high in alcohol. The most popular brands are Pilsner Urquell, Budvar, and Staropramen. This is the perfect give to bring back for family, friends, and colleagues to share your adventure.

    Absinthe

While many Western countries have banned its production, the Czech Republic never prohibited it. You can purchase it at almost any grocery store and liquor store around the country, offering a variety of brands and sizes. If you decide to bring this anise-flavored spirit home, remember to drink it in moderation.

    Garnet Jewelry

A royal gem that artisans have crafted into jewelry and art for centuries. The pieces vary in price based on factors such as coloring, size, and the type of art that features the gem. Make sure to get a certificate of authenticity before you purchase since there is a lot of fake garnet on the market.

    Spa Wafers

Essentially a giant wafer cookie that is composed of wafers, and a layer of hazelnut, vanilla, or cocoa. These make for a delicious gift to bring home! The most popular brand is Karlovy Vary, that’s known for its thermal water and spas, but there are many brands available for purchase that add their own flare.

    Becherovka

A popular herbal drink liquor that contains ginger and a few other herbs and spices and is usually done as a shot. This drink is available in almost all bars and pubs to try before you purchase a bottle to bring home.

    Wooden Toys

Handmade wooden toys are a traditional gift given to children for birthdays and holidays. There are many different types available to suit different ages such as puzzles, pull-along toys, trains, puppets, and more. These can be purchased from a variety of markets or boutique artisan shops around the country.

    Pardubice Gingerbread

A city with a long history of making gingerbread including a gingerbread museum! The recipe, a long-kept secret, received EU protection and got recorded in the register of Protected Labels and Origins in 2008. The gingerbread come in different shapes and sizes, making great souvenirs.

The Czech Republic offers a diverse array of authentic Czech souvenirs that reflect its rich cultural heritage and artistic craftsmanship. These unique gifts, ranging from traditional marionettes to exquisite Bohemian glass, provide not only a tangible memory of your visit but also a connection to the country’s history and traditions. By choosing these locally made souvenirs, you not only take home a piece of the Czech Republic but also support the talented artisans and craftsmen who have been preserving their heritage for generations. So, the next time you visit this enchanting country, remember to explore local businesses and markets to discover these remarkable Czech treasures and create lasting memories of your journey.
