Budapest is a major city with hundreds of restaurants ranging from traditional Hungarian restaurants to mainstream Western fast-food chains. There are so many choices, that it’s easy to fall into a tourist trap eating okay food at astronomical prices. While visiting Budapest, I researched in advance where to eat and also received local recommendations with a full Google Map of their favorite places to eat. Continue reading below for my complete list of where to eat in Budapest, allocated from my and locals’ favorites.

    Komedias Kavehaz

    Traditional Hungarian

    $$

One of my favorite traditional Hungarian restaurants, a must for visitors looking for a traditional restaurant experience. The restaurant is located in the center of Buda but gives large portions for a decent price. I highly recommend calling and placing a reservation in advance because there is not a lot of seating available and the place fills up quickly, especially on nights when they’re doing live music. Some of the staff do not speak English, so you may end up meeting the restaurant owner who is a complete delight!

    Cafe New York

    Cafe

    $$$$

One of the most historic cafes in Budapest! It was built in the 19th century, once the gathering place for artists. During the Communist period, it was switched to a sports goods store, before transitioning back into a restaurant in 1954 called, Hungaria. The restaurant switched back to its’ original name in 1989 and has been in operation ever since.

    Ghetto Gulyas

    Traditional Hungarian

    $$

Especially known for its goulash, this restaurant is a traditional Hungarian restaurant focused on serving delicious stews. The restaurant is highly recommended by visitors and tourists due to the comfortable atmosphere, large portions, and decent prices. This restaurant is perfect for warm hearty food to warm up on a cold day or for those interested in trying Hungarian comfort food.

    The Sweet- By Vintage Garden

    Confectionary

    $

A paradise for dessert enthusiasts, The Sweet- By Vintage Garden offers a delectable array of ice creams, cookies, and pastries. Beyond the scrumptious treats, the store’s thematic desserts add an extra layer of charm, making it a must-visit for those with a sweet tooth. The store loves to do themed desserts, so be sure to visit during different holidays to try their new designs and offerings.

    Belvarosi Disznotoros

    Hungarian Cuisine

    $-$$

If you’re interested in trying Hungarian food but don’t know where to start, this is the place for you! This place operates as both a restaurant and a takeaway canteen. You start with a meat and then build up your plate from there and the portion sizes are huge, so be prepared for leftovers. There is a menu to help guide you in your food decision-making, or you could just point to what looks delicious or ask for a recommendation from the staff.

    Menza Etterem es Kavehaz

    Hungarian/International Cuisine Fusion

    $$$

Merging international influences with traditional Hungarian dishes, Menza Etterem es Kavehaz offers a unique culinary fusion. Though on the higher end in terms of pricing, the amalgamation of old and new flavors promises a delightful dining experience. Due to its popularity, reservations are strongly recommended.

Budapest does not have many vegan or vegetarian options in general, and few are good. However, this is one of the best vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Budapest. Here you can find vegan and vegetarian options of traditional Hungarian dishes. Enjoy delicious food with an amazing view of the river.

Strudel House Budapest, Elso Pesti Reteshaz

    Hungarian

    $$-$$$

Calling all strudel lovers! Don’t be fooled by the name, the restaurant offers a variety of dishes beyond strudels, but trying the strudel is a must! This restaurant is a multigenerational family-owned restaurant whose goal is to preserve the art of traditional Hungarian strudel-making. When you walk in, you immediately see the incredible interior design to reflects Hungarian culture.

    Tukory Etterem

Old-school Hungarian restaurant located in Liberty Square. It may not be the fanciest restaurant, but it is true to its Hungarian roots. This restaurant is loved both by locals and tourists. I highly recommend trying the goulash, which comes in a hearty portion size.
