Considering a visit to Edinburgh and looking for the best dining experiences? Whether you’re a local or a traveler, finding where to eat in Edinburgh at the right restaurant is crucial for a memorable meal. Explore the top 10 restaurants in Edinburgh, offering a diverse range of cuisines from traditional Scottish to international delights.
Oink
Pork Meat Pies
$$
Recommended to me by a local, this is a restaurant for a quick bite or for a bite to go. While it is a smaller non-formal restaurant, Oink draws in a large crowd for its famous pork meat pies and pork dishes. Located on the street that was the inspiration for Diagon Alley, Oink does not have a lot of seating options so be prepared to wait if you wish to eat delicious food while admiring this famous street.
Timberyard
Scottish, Nordic Fusion
$$-$$$
A modern restaurant where the aesthetic of the restaurant matches the food. While this place is more expensive, it is great for those looking for a fancier experience or celebrating a special occasion.
Colonnades
European
$$
Have you ever had a formal restaurant experience in the middle of a library? At Colonnades, you can! This restaurant is located in the center of the historic Signet Library, creating a truly unique dining experience. While it is known for the three-tier plates for afternoon tea, there are a variety of choices to choose from at any point in the day.
The Lookout By Gardener’s Cottage
Cafe, Scottish Modern Dining
$-$$
A literal “destination” restaurant due to its location on the top of Calton Hill. This restaurant is located within the restored observatory and glass dome, creating an amazing aerial view of Edinburgh. The menus change very often to complement this unique dining experience.
The Pantry
Brunch, Vegan and Vegetarian Friendly
$$
For the brunch-goers, or those looking to save money by having two meals at once (like I do), The Pantry is a popular brunch restaurant serving up a mean eggs benedict. While breakfast is only served until 11 am, the restaurant boasts an all-day brunch menu for those looking for a warm breakfast meal later in the day. Additionally, one of the co-founders is vegetarian, so there are many vegan and vegetarian offerings on the menu.
The Cellar Door
Scottish Cuisine
$$
Located underneath George IV Bridge in the Old Town, this restaurant is known for serving modern Scottish cuisine using locally sourced ingredients. While the menu resembles traditional Scottish dishes, a closer look will reveal a new twist on the dishes. For a memorable dining experience, order the six-course “Taste of Scotland” which includes tastes of the old and new.
Mum’s Great Comfort Food
British, American Cuisine
$-$$
A retro-style bar serving classic comfort food dishes, perfect for a rainy day or cold weather. The comfortable atmosphere, food, and staff provide a warm experience to remember. Be sure to try the mac and cheese dish which is sure to fill you for your busy day of adventures.
The Bon Vivant
Contemporary Scottish Cuisine
$$
Located in the New Town, this restaurant has become a popular hangout spot for locals and visitors. Known for its delicious cocktails and modern Scottish dishes, The Bon Vivant is known for its blend of the old and new. Be sure to book a table in advance as this place fills up quickly.
The Gardener’s Cottage
Scottish Cuisine
$$-$$$
An old stone cottage from 1836, is now a high-end dining experience. This restaurant takes garden-to-table to a whole new level considering their produce comes from their own garden on site! For those looking to plan their meals ahead, note that the menu varies a lot depending on what produce is available in season.
Forage & Chatter
Scottish Cuisine
$-$$
This restaurant takes pride in how the majority of the ingredients used are sourced within a 25-mile radius of the restaurant, demonstrating that everything served is fresh. However, this restaurant is not for those who like to look at a menu and plan ahead, as the menu changes daily depending on what ingredients are available that day.
In the heart of Edinburgh’s culinary scene lies a diverse array of restaurants, each with its own unique charm and flavor. Whether you crave traditional Scottish delights, international fusion, or a cozy spot for comfort food, the city caters to every palate. From the historic Colonnades to the modern Timberyard, and the scenic Lookout By Gardener’s Cottage, Edinburgh’s dining options promise not just a meal but an experience.
